Security Requirements: Know What Your Policy Expects

Insurance cover is not only about having a policy in place. It is also important to understand the security requirements linked to that policy.

Security requirements may differ between insurers, policies, vehicles and properties. What applies to one client may not apply to another. Clients should always familiarise themselves with the security requirements noted on their policy schedule or insurer documentation.

Where security devices form part of the insurer’s requirements, these must remain operational, maintained and serviced where applicable.

This may include:

  • Linked home alarm systems
  • Armed response
  • Vehicle tracking devices
  • Additional vehicle tracking requirements
  • Specific overnight parking arrangements
  • Security gates, locks or other protective measures

Linked home alarms should be tested regularly and activated when you are not at home.

Vehicle tracking devices should be tested at least once every six months. Some insurers may require two tracking devices, depending on the vehicle year, model and variant.

It is also important to disclose any changes to your security arrangements, risk address or overnight parking immediately. Failure to comply with specific insurer security requirements may affect your cover or the outcome of a claim.

The safest approach is simple: check your policy schedule, test your security devices, and let us know when anything changes.
